The stadium did not have a name when the inaugural game was played there, but 12,860 fans watched the Lumberjacks squeeze by one point over visiting Montana on September 17, 1977. The dome has been the site of the Big Sky men’s basketball tournament in 1987, 1997, 1998 and 2006.

In 1979, the dome was named after J. Lawrence Walkup, who had been president of the university from 1957 until his retirement that year. The stadium is 6,880 feet above sea level, which is second in elevation only to Wyoming’s War Memorial Stadium in the NCAA Division I schools. The dome initially used AstroTurf for the field but changed to FieldTurf in 2002.
