It is the home field for the Western Illinois Leathernecks football team, which competes in the Missouri Valley as an NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision team, and seats 16,368.
The stadium debuted in 1950 and is named after Rock Hanson, a decorated United States Marine Corps Colonel who fought in World War II as well as being the head coach of the Leathernecks from 1926 to 1941. Hanson, who was an apprentice of legendary coach Knute Rockne, got permission to use the name the Leathernecks from the Marine Corps as the school’s mascot.

The funds were gathered by a surcharge on tickets for enhancement and life safety. The surcharge was done by request of the student body. As of 2011, the field’s surface is Matrix Turf.
