Gayle and Tom Benson Stadium broke ground in January of 2008 and opened eight months later on September 1, 2008, with a ceremony honoring Gayle and Tom Benson, who were avid supporters of the university and provided a healthy donation to start the Cardinals football program. Benson was also the owner of the New Orleans Saints, before his passing in 2018. The stadium was renovated just two years later to accommodate more seating and also a new field surface of FieldTurf Classic HD.
