The original name of the venue was the Pub when it opened in 1970. The venue has gone through multiple name changes. In 1974, it was renamed Fox and Sam’s. In 1975, it was renamed Gabe & Walker’s due to a naming contest. The name was derived from the fictional spokesmen for Falstaff beer in a series of ads at the time.

In the 1990s, the establishment went by the name the Rotation and promoted electronic dance music events. It was changed to the name the Picador in 2010 until Kading acquired it, renaming it Gabe’s and going back to booking national acts.
