The football stadium, which opened in 1946 and can accommodate 10,000 fans, is the home stadium for the Austin Peay State University Governors football team, which competes in the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision and ASUN Conference.

When it was first opened, the stadium was called Clarksville Municipal Stadium and was built by the city of Clarksville, which allowed the Governors to play in the stadium. In 1970, the city gave one-third of the title to the state of Tennessee and another third to Montgomery County, which contains Clarksville.

Austin Peay State University bought the stadium from the Stadium Authority and the county of Montgomery in 1993. That same year the stadium’s surface was changed to Stadia Turf and renamed Governor Stadium.

After the 2013 season, extensive renovations were done on the stadium with the west side being completely torn down and a new edifice erected with luxury boxes, a training area and new chairback seats. The field and track were completely torn out and replaced. In 2014, the stadium’s east grandstands were refurbished, with in-game operations relocated to the press box. In 2016, the stadium was renamed Fortera Stadium, due to an agreement with Fortera Credit Union.
