It was the notorious site of a 1977 surprise concert performed by the Rolling Stones for then Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau’s wife, Margaret Trudeau, who had been partying with them and had been romantically linked to Mick Jagger.
The apocryphal story behind the original building on the site is that it was first used to harbor escaped slaves and then became a live music hall in 1850. The current building was constructed in 1910 and has been the site of a dry goods store, a barbershop and multiple restaurants until the 1940s. In 1946, proprietors at the time Joseph Brown and John Lang received one of the first liquor licenses in Toronto to make it a club.
