The club leased 45 acres of farmland and Bert Way laid out a six-hole course. Three more holes were added in 1900. In 1902, the membership cap was raised to 200. That same year, the club bought 135 acres of land and developed an 18-hole course. In 1913, more land was purchased and noted golf course designer Donald Ross was brought in after examining the land he decided two 18-hole courses could be laid out. Horace Rackham paid for the course construction at a cost of $100,000.

Celebrated golfer Horton Smith was hired as the Club Pro in 1945 upon the retirement of Ross. In 1959, Smith was inducted into the PGA Hall of Fame. The current club pro is Josh Upson. Major tournaments at the club include the 1911 Western Amateur and the 1992 U.S. Mid-Amateur being played there. In 2019, the club became the host of the annual PGA Tour event the Rocket Mortgage Classic.
