The theater was built in 1970 and is named for film director and alumni, Clarence Brown. The building consists of three different production venues, namely the Clarence Brown Theatre Mainstage, the Clarence Brown Lab Theatre and the Ula Love Doughty Carousel Theatre.

This venue is honored to be one of only twelve academic League of Resident Theater Institutions in the United States and has received a Shubert Foundation Grant. The staff here work to extend drama to the deaf community and annually schedules Deaf Night at the Theater productions.
