The arena was built in large part due to the successes of head coaches Lute Olson and Ralph Miller, whose tenures had greatly increased fan attendance. At the end of 1983, Iowa’s men’s basketball team played their first game at the complex against Michigan State.
The complex saw record attendance in 1985 in particular when the women’s basketball team faced their rivals Ohio State. More than 20,000 fans attended the game, setting a new NCAA attendance record.
