It is home to the Stockton Ports, a minor league baseball team that currently competes in the California League, since the 2005 season.
The Banner Island Ballpark broke ground in the spring of 2004 and opened directly a year later on April 28, 2005, to the first baseball game in the Stockton Ports' new stadium in which they played the San Jose Giants and beat them heavily with a final score of 7-4, to a jammed packed sellout crowd of 5,287. The stadium was designed by HKS, Inc. and cost $22 million to build. It was contracted by the Swinerton Builders and the project manager was the McCuskey Group. The capacity of the stadium is 5,200 spectators for a baseball game and the field is made of grass.
