Born in Kalamata, Greece, Yiannis Chryssomallis is a composer, keyboardist, pianist, and performer most famous for his publicly broadcast concerts at historic monuments. By the time he moved to the United States in 1973 to study psychology, he was already proficient in piano and passionate about music. After graduation, he joined rock band Chameleon, composed music for Minnesota Dance Theatre, and began pursuing film scoring. In 1980, he released his debut album, Optimystique. From 1988 to 1994, he composed music for seven motion pictures while simultaneously releasing original music. Two albums released during this period, Dare To Dream (1992) and In My Time (1993), were nominated for Grammy Awards.
In 1993, Yanni recorded a live concert and album at the Acropolis of Athens which was broadcast on PBS, sold more than seven million copies, and was viewed by half a billion people. He followed this successful concert engagement with appearances at the Taj Mahal in India and the Forbidden City in China, as well as others. To date, he has released 18 studio albums, topped Billboard’s Top New Age Album charts 16 times, and toured in over 30 countries.
