She began taking pipa lessons at nine years old and went on to become the youngest student accepted to Beijing’s Central Conservatory of Music at the age of 13. She trained in traditional Chinese classical styles under famed musicians like Liu Dehai.
Wu Man first performed in the US in 1985 as part of China’s Youth Arts Troupe. She then moved to Connecticut in 1990 to continue her studies, where she performed with premier groups like the Kronos Quartet. In the late 1990s, she made a recording of Harrison's Concerto for Pipa and String Orchestra with the Chicago Symphony, a recording which was later nominated for a Grammy Award. Wu Man is also one of the original members of Yo-Yo Ma’s celebrated Silk Road Project.
In the 2000s, Wu Man worked extensively with famed composer Philip Glass, performing as part of his opera The Sound of A Voice as well as his composition for the 2004 Summer Olympics.
