Ice racing has been a sport since 1975, when a group of dirt track speedway motorcyclists decided to race on ice, led by Staten Lorentz, from Michigan. The motorcycles primarily used were 250cc flat track bikes. The first race was promoted by a motorcycle dealership in Huntsville, Alabama.

The second race occurred in New York followed by a race taking place in the Kent State University Field House in Kent, Ohio. Bob Hetrick invited his speedway rider friend Gary Densford to race. Hetrick would win the race and Densford finished runner up. This event led to the World Championship Ice Racing Series.

Densford truly enjoyed the event he had just competed in and traveled around looking for other venues to hold races in. He would find four willing arenas to hold events in and wrote a rule book for the event, in effect creating a brand-new motorsport.

Densford then formed a company, International Champion Events, or ICE, to promote and hold ice racing events, which at that time were called “speedway on ice” races. The first race event of the fledgling company was in 1977, at the Oklahoma State Fair Coliseum in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. More events followed, occurring in Amarillo, Texas and then Tucson, Arizona and Dallas, Texas.

Gone are the days of old Jawas and British-made JAP bikes, using sheet metal screws for traction. With new innovations every year, ice racing has come into its own.
