The World Baseball Classic is a tournament held every four years that features the national teams of its member competitors. The tournament is sanctioned by the World Baseball Softball Confederation. The winner is bestowed the title of "World Champion."
The tournament is patterned after the FIFA World Cup and was conceived as a result of the International Olympic Committee deciding to remove baseball from the Olympics in 2005.
