Select performances from the festival are broadcast from CBC Radio One and also on CBC Television and The Comedy Network.
The Winnipeg Comedy Festival was first held in 2002 and was created by stand-up comedian and transgender playwright Al Rae, now called Lara Rae, with CBC Radio’s Tom Anniko. Together, they worked with the Gas Station Arts Centre. The headliners that year were David Broadfoot, Cathy Jones and David Steinberg.

In 2003, the festival expanded to include two tours, with one being in French and one being in English. Four French and four English-speaking communities were visited. There was also an expanded headline itinerary with ten well-known comedians performing.
The program has continued to grow in size and scope and there have been some signature performances and appearances of note, such as Big Daddy Tazz performing a nearly nine hour uninterrupted comedy set in 2006 and John Wing having performed for eight years in a row.
