He grew up on a family farm in the southeastern hills of Iowa which inspires much of his music. Whitmore still lives on his childhood family farm to this day.

Whitmore started his career as a roadie for the punk band Ten Grand which led to him performing himself. Unfortunately, his parents died within a few years of each other, and Whitmore used that grief to fuel his songwriting. He developed a relationship with the recording label Southern Records where he released three albums. Since his beginnings in 1999, he has consistently released an album every 2-3 years. He has also produced 2 EPs, 1 compilation, and has a vast list of collaborations and contributions.

Whitmore has received many praises for his blues and country style of playing. All his music features his vocals as well as guitar and banjo. Throughout his tours, he has performed with Chris Cornell, Frank Turner, Red Sparrows, and many others. As well as performing his own compositions, he also has featured covers of songs by Johnny Cash, Bill Withers, Bad Religion, and ZZ Top.
