Born in Buffalo in 1964, Eddins began learning to play the piano at the age of five. He would go on to study music at Rochester’s Eastman School of Music under David Effron, and in 1983 became one of the youngest students to graduate in the school’s history. Eddins then turned toward conducting, studying the craft under Daniel Lewis at USC’s Thornton School of Music.
Eddins became a founding member of Miami’s New World Symphony Orchestra in 1987, going on to enjoy an illustrious career conducting groups like the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Berlin State Opera and the Minnesota Orchestra. He has collaborated with several esteemed composers including John Estacio, Steve Reich and Aaron Jay Kernis.
Eddins has been widely praised for his versatility, as he has recorded works by canonical greats like Beethoven and Debussy as well as works by more avant-garde composers like Bernstein and Boulanger. In 2000 he received the Seaver Conducting Award, and in 2005 was made music director of the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra.
