In high school, he founded the punk rock trio Tiger Jaw with friends and fellow musicians Ben Walsh and Brianna Collins, and the group earned modest critical acclaim for their 2006 debut album Belongs to the Dead. McIlwee toured with the trio for a number of years before leaving to pursue a solo career in 2013.

The artist took a turn toward electronic music, establishing the mix of hip-hop, emo rock and house elements for which he would become well-known. In the years that followed, he collaborated with several high-profile artists including Lil Peep, Code Orange and Lil Tracy.
