This was the start of some very successful seasons for the Hilltoppers.
It was not until 1946 that the Hilltoppers joined a conference after competing as an independent. They originally played in the Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference before joining the Ohio Valley Conference in 1948. After a stint in the Sun Belt Conference, the team joined Conference USA in 2009. The Western Kentucky Hilltoppers won their first FCS National Championship in 2002. The football team has won over ten conference championships since the beginning of their program.
