They were the first choir from Washington to form separate from a church body or university. The Washington Chorus was originally called the Oratorio Society of Washington and was created by doctor and musician Hugh Hayward. In 2020 Eugene Rogers made history when he became the choir’s first director of color.
The Washington Chorus quickly became one of the preeminent choirs in the whole of the US. They have appeared with premier symphonies and orchestras, including both the National and Baltimore Symphony Orchestras. In particular, the Washington Chorus has collaborated with the National Symphony Orchestra many hundreds of times, often performing under the guidance of some of the world’s leading conductors.
