An assembly of Polish notables, gentry and musicians had the idea of forming an orchestra in 1901. Between 1901 and 1939, numerous composers and virtuosos utilized the orchestra to premiere their works, including Edvard Grieg, Arthur Honneger, Ruggiero Leoncavallo and Sergei Prokofiev. 

Other musicians who have performed with the Philharmonic were noted pianists Ignacy Jan Paderewski, Arthur Rubinstein, Vladimir Horowitz and Claudio Arrau. They also have worked with violinists Jascha Helfietz and Pablo de Sarasate as well as the cellist Pablo Casals. The Chopin International Piano Competition has been hosted since 1927 by the Orchestra.
