The Virginia Chamber Orchestra, or VCO, was established in 1971 to be a touring orchestra, delivering quality performances by bus to Virginia residents. The VCO moved to Northern Virginia by invitation in the early 1980s. The first Musical Director of the VCO was Emil de Cou.
The VCO first expanded their performance area to the Washington D.C. area in the 2010-2011 season. The VCO first began performing educational outreach in the 1980s. Since 1998, the VCO has been performing educational television broadcasts and has recently begun streaming broadcasts for educational purposes.

He has also been a guest conductor at the Bordeaux National Symphony, the Minsk Philharmonic Orchestra in Belarus and the New Symphony Orchestra of Sofia in Bulgaria.
A shortlist of previous guest artists that have performed with the VCO include Robert Oppelt, the Principal Bassist of the National Symphonic Orchestra. Other artists include the vocal group Pro Coro, the jazz ensemble the Airmen of Note and woodwind multi-instrumentalist Andrew Axelrad.
