The Vermilion County Bobcats are the latest team to join the Southern Professional Hockey League and play for Danville, Illinois. They are owned by Ellen J. Tully and coached by Mike Watt, a former NHL player and a junior gold medalist in hockey for Canada.

The Bobcats compete in the fourth tier of professional hockey, and as such are now the top-tier team in the area above the Danville Dashers. They play their home games out of Palmer Arena.

The team was formed in 2021 as an expansion unit of the Southern Professional Hockey League. Though based out of North Carolina, the bulk of the league’s teams are from the American Southeast, with outgrowth teams in Illinois and Indiana. The Illinois expansions began in 2011 and continued to multiply, with the Vermilion County Bobcats following not long after the Bloomington Thunder and Peoria Rivermen.

The new Bobcats are fortunate enough to receive funding from USA Hockey, and often partner with NHL teams to bring star players to their games as a fan service. With Vermilion County Bobcats tickets you can be one of the first to see this freshman team on the ice. The team is a natural outgrowth of the Vermilion County population’s storied relationship with the sport of hockey.
