The Upright Citizens Brigade is a sketch comedy and improv troupe that grew out of Chicago’s ImprovOlympic training center in 1990. The original members were future stars Amy Poehler, Matt Walsh, Ian Roberts, Matt Besser, Rick Roman, Adam McKay, Horatio Sanz and Drew Franklin. All of these members have gone on to enjoy successful careers in film, television or stand up comedy.
The Upright Citizens Brigade gave their earliest performances at Kill the Poet in Chicago, where they developed the shows Thunderball, Bucket of Truth and Big Dirty Hands, among others. In the late 90s, the group moved to New York, where they began offering comedy training courses in addition to performing shows. The classes were a runaway success, and the Upright Citizens Brigade were able to open their own theater in Chelsea.
The troupe developed several successful television programs, most notably The UCB Show and Upright Citizens Brigade, and performed weekly on Late Night with Conan O’Brien several times in the late 90s. The organization has since produced a slew of notable alumni including Aubrey Plaza, Paul Scheer and Kelly Marie Tran.
