They are one of the oldest Division I hockey teams, tracing the program’s roots to 1904 when they played their first game against Union Classical Institute. The Dutchmen enjoyed several winning seasons in the program’s early years, entering Division II play in 1975. They finished first in the regular season standings after only one year as a Division II team.

By 1991, the Dutchmen had been promoted to a Division I team under coach Bruce Delventhal. They played a number of successful seasons in the 1990s and 2000s, though their strongest season came in 2010. That year the Dutchmen finished the season with a 26-10 record and came in first in the ECAC Hockey rankings. It was an accomplishment the team would repeat three more times between 2011 and 2016 under the direction of coach Rick Bennett.
