As part of its mandate, it sponsors the annual UIL State Marching Band competition.

5A, 3A and 1A schools compete during odd-numbered years. Even-numbered years see 2A, 4A and 6A schools take part in the competition. A marching band has to compete in either three or five rounds of competition to become champion.

The first round is a region contest, where all bands perform for ratings and there is no distinction between the open class and military bands. If a band desires to advance to the next round, it must declare whether it is open class or military. Then,a band needs to receive a Division 1 rating to advance to the next round.
