UCLA first fielded a varsity women’s gymnastics team in 1977, with Lee Ann Lobdill who coached through the 1979 season and led the team to an overall record of 34-30. Jerry Tomlinson took over as head coach from 1980 to 1990. In Tomlinson’s tenure, the team went 191-63-1. Tomlinson’s teams would win five conference championships and four NCAA Regional Championships.
