Formed in 1998, Tyr quickly gained recognition throughout Europe and, in 2002, debuted its album, How Far to Asgaard. While the album fared well among fans, the band's second album, Eric the Red, rose to critical acclaim and garnished positive ratings from All Music, Metal Storm and Lords of Metal.
True to the band's name, Tyr performed at the Ragnarok Festival in 2007 and 2009. Additionally, the band took part in the Paganfest tour across Europe and the United States in 2008 alongside Turisas, Moonsorrow, Korpiklaani and Eluveitie. That same year, Tyr debuted its fourth studio album, Land, which featured vocals in English, Danish, Faroese and Norwegian.
Tyr continued to tour frequently worldwide in the 2000s. They performed at the Black Sails over Europe, the 70000 Tons of Metal, Paganfest and Blodsvept over Europe between 2009 and 2013. The band's most successful album, Hel, debuted in 2019, becoming the first Tyr album to chart internationally. The critically acclaimed album peaked at No. 31 on German Albums, No. 36 in Swiss Albums, and No. 60 on Australian Albums charts.
