He briefly served as lead singer for the Tennessee River Boys band, then in the early 90s was signed to Epic Records after earning an award for Texas Entertainer of the Year.

Herndon rose to fame following the 1995 release of his single “What Mattered Most,” which was a number one hit on the Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks chart. The album itself went number one on Top Heatseekers and was certified gold by 1996. The artist’s successes continued with the release of Living in a Moment, which reached the number six spot on the Top Country Albums chart. In 2010 Herndon would earn a nod for the Grammy Award for Best Southern, Country or Bluegrass Gospel Album.
