After the encounter, Maverick defies orders to guide his wingman back to base. Cougar was supposed to get the shot but because of the trauma of the encounter, he quits, leaving the Top Gun slot to Maverick.

The film’s popularity has not gone down over the years and the studio issued a re-release on IMAX 3D.  In addition, the soundtrack has gone platinum 9 times and earned an Academy Award for “Take My Breath Away” by Berlin.

The US Library of Congress selected the film for preservation in the National Film Registry, finding it “culturally, historically or aesthetically significant.” A sequel, Top Gun: Maverick was released in 2022.
