Tommy Castro was born in San Jose, California, in 1955 and began learning to play the guitar at age 10. He was influenced by Elvin Bishop, Taj Mahal, Mike Bloomfield, and other blues artists of his day. Tommy began to develop his own distinct sound and style after mixing the blues and rock & roll he loved with the soul music he heard blasting from lowriders in his neighborhood. He perfected his guitar abilities and gritty vocals, gaining experience performing in a competitive club scene in San Francisco.

He was hired as the lead singer and guitarist for NiteCry, a popular blues band in the San Francisco Bay Area, in 1985. Then, Castro performed all over the country with The Dynatones. In 1992, he started the first Tommy Castro Band, and he's never stopped touring since. Since his solo debut in 1994, he’s made 16 albums. In 2012, Castro reduced his music to its basic elements in order to create a high-energy, larger-than-life sound with The Painkillers.
