The band name is made out of the initials of the original members Tony Ortiz, Louis “Kayel” Sharpe and Ralph “Aby” Cruz. Ortiz, Sharpe, and Cruz all hail from Upper Manhattan, though they are of Puerto Rican descent. They were discovered after a performance in 1984 at an East Harlem church. The group’s future manager, Joey Gardner, saw their performance and helped them get signed to Tommy Boy Records. They then released their hit single “One Way Love,” which exploded in popularity throughout Latin club communities. Their first album Scars of Love was released in 1987. The group had moved beyond their original freestyle dance music sound by 1990. Their album Louder Than Love incorporated unique R&B influences, and their ‘91 single “Crash (Have Some Fun)” saw the use of distinctly hip-hop vocals. As the popularity of freestyle dance music dwindled, the group stopped recording. They eventually split up due to creative differences between Sharpe and Cruz. This split proved temporary, however, as the trio reunited to continue performing in 2001. They then recorded Forever, the group’s first album in nearly a decade.
