The band has had quite a few roster turnovers since they formed but the band still centers around guitarist Sean Delander, along with fellow guitarist Andy Marsh, bassist Kevin Butler, drummer Jesse Beahler, and vocalist Chris “CJ” McMahon. The band released their first EP Infinite Death in 2008 and immediately reached number 10 on the local AIR charts. The band started recording their first full studio album The Adversary in 2010 after their original vocalist Brandan van Ryn left the group. 

Following a lengthy tour, Thy Art is Murder released their sophomore album Hate in 2012 with the popular single “Reign of Darkness”. After another lengthy tour with the likes of Within the Ruins and Betraying the Martyrs, the band dropped their third album Holy War in 2015 after signing with the label Nuclear Blast. The following year they released a split album with Fit for an Autopsy and The Acacia Strain entitled The Depression Sessions.  After a brief break McMahon rejoined the band for their fourth studio album Dear Desolation. 2019 saw the release of the band's fifth album, with a new drummer, Human Target.
