The Urge was originally formed in 1987 by Jeff Herschel, Karl Grable, and Pat Malecek. Then, Steve Ewing joined the bunch after going through to singers prior. They put out their first album Bust Me Dat Forty in August of 1989, then shortly after put on their next LP featuring saxophonist Jordan Chalden. Then recruited trombonist Mat Kwiatkowski, and also featured trumpeter Tony Albano. After Chalden left the group because of personal reasons the group paired up with Bill Reiter and Todd Painter. They have toured with some of the greatest heavy metal bands including Korn, Incubus and Soul Asylum. They have even collaborated with Nick Hexum of 311. Their first breakup was in 2002 when Steve Ewin went onto a solo career but then got back together shortly after. Then, again, taking a break in 2005, which lasted for six-year. They regrouped in 2011 and have been touring ever since. In 2018 they partnered with the St. Louis Blues to create their new goal song titled "The Blues Have the Urge."
