Turner relocated with his family as a child to Winchester, England and then moved to Meonstoke. He attended Summer Fields before going to university on a scholarship to Eton College. One of his classmates at Eton College was Prince William. He also studied History at the London School of Economics.

Turner then turned primarily solo. His debut solo EP, Campfile Punkrock, was released in 2006. His ninth album, FITHC, was released February 11, 2022, and climbed to number one on the UK album charts. He performs and records with his band The Sleeping Souls, which consists of Ben Loyd on guitar and mandolin, bassist Tarrant Anderson, pianist and mandolinist Matt Nasir and drummer Callum Green.
