The Other Side Play Tickets
See the thought-provoking play performed live with The Other Side tickets. The Other Side, sometimes also translated as The Other Shore, is a 1997 play by Chinese writer Gao Xingjian. The work is known for its minimal set design and use of actors placed within the audience. Inspired by the avant-garde movement in French theatre, the meaning of The Other Side is subject to much debate. The name for the play refers to the Buddhist phrase “the other shore,” a reference to the enlightenment sought by Buddhist practitioners. In Xingjian’s piece, however, the audience is told that this other shore does not exist. By the end of the play, attendees are left wondering if enlightenment is something other than it first appears, or if enlightenment is even possible at all.
The Other Side premiered at the Taiwan National College of Art in 1990, then was revived at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts in 1995. The play has since gone on to enjoy prominent productions the world over, in particular in 2003 by the Sons of Beckett Theatre Company. Critics have hailed the play’s timeless vision, chilling criticism of human psychology and subtle satire of human political endeavors.
