The Orpheum Theatre Group collaborated with the Memphis Symphony Orchestra (MSO) to create the Orchestra Unplugged. The MSO is an American-based orchestra from Memphis, Tennessee, with the Cannon Center for the Performing Arts as its primary performance venue. Since its inception in 1960, the orchestra has had different musical directors, including Vincent DeFrank (1960-1984), Alan Balter (1984-1998), David Loebel (1998-2010) and Mei-Ann Chen (2010-2016). In 1965, the Memphis Symphony Chorus was formed and an integral part of the MSO comprising more than 100 choir members.

During its operations, the MSO was homeless (1996-2003) during the delayed construction of the Cannon Center. But it was still considered one of the most successful artistic and organizational orchestras of its era with more than 500 members. Musicians of the ensemble hailed from world-renowned orchestras, including the Vienna Philharmonic, Philadelphia and Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, Chicago and San Francisco Symphony.
The MSO has been a staple in its community, creating over 100 jobs, generating more than $8 million dollars for the local economy and performing for over half a million people annually. They have also performed for multiple events, such as the Martin Luther King Jr. tribute (Medley) between 1999 and 2002, Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 for a Hurricane Katrina musician benefit (2005) and Mozart’s Requiem (2016). In 2020, the orchestra conducted its first commercial recording in more than 30 years. In addition to its performances, the MSO offered educational programs, such as Tune and Tales for elementary schools and libraries or side-by-side concerts with other choirs. For the community, they offered a program known as Leading From Every Chair, a day-long workshop that taught the values of teamwork, successful leadership practices and problem-solving amongst the MSO's ensemble.
