The Northern Pikes were founded in Saskatchewan in 1984, and quickly caught the eye of Virgin Records through two self-released EPs. They signed to the label in 1986, through which they released their debut album Big Blue Sky later that year. The album found significant success through the song “Teenland,” the band’s first nationwide hit.
The release of Secrets of the Alibi in 1988 further cemented their place on the scene through three additional hits, “Let’s Pretend,” “Hopes Go Astray” and “Wait for Me.”
The Northern Pikes found the most success, however, with their 1990 album Snow in June. Snow in June was a hit in both the US and Canada, and contained their most well-known song “She Ain’t Pretty.” The music video for “She Ain’t Pretty” enjoyed widespread play on television, and earned The Northern Pikes a Juno Award nomination the following year.
