The skilled quintet is made up of Nolan Lawrence (lead vocals, mandolin), Jimmy Rea (guitar), Chad Graves (dobro), Mark Cassidy (banjo) and Gary Rea (bass). A year after the band came together, they started to gain recognition with a championship win of the Telluride Bluegrass Band Competition. After winning more competitions and releasing an EP, The Hillbenders were signed by Compass Records and produced their debut album Down to My Last Dollar in 2012. The band followed up with a tour while working on 2013's Can You Hear Me. Powered by their fast-paced fingerplay The Hillbenders gained major respect in the bluegrass scene for their energetic performances.
Thanks to a roster full of talented musicians The Hillbenders have grown into one of the most intriguing acts in Bluegrass. When Louis Meyers contacted the group about making an acoustic reproduction of the Who’s album Tommy they had no idea it would take their career to the next level. Starting with a live performance at the 2015 SXSW conference Tommy: A Bluegrass Opry received rave reviews and eventually led to an audience with the Who’s Pete Townshend. The Hillbenders returned to their original roots with their fourth self-titled album released in 2019. With 9 original songs and covers of songs like MGMT’s “Kids”, The Hillbenders show they make great music regardless of who wrote it.
