The group consists of three sisters, Wanda, Sheila, and Pamela Hutchison, who started out as a gospel group in the 1960s. They originally toured with their father and sang on Jerry Van Dyke’s show “Children’s Gospel” before transitioning into the R&B/soul act they are known as today.
The sisters released their debut album, So I Can Love You, in 1969, and it soon took the no. 43 spot on the Billboard Top R&B Albums chart. Two singles from the album, the title track and “The Best Part of a Love Affair,” also charted. The group continued releasing singles in the years to come that each gained widespread popularity.
Their third studio album, Flowers, was released on Columbia Records in 1976 and became certified gold by the RIAA. It was after this album that they won a Grammy award for Best R&B Performance, as well as an American Music award.
