In 1965, Bassist Curtis Bachman and guitarist Carl Giammarese left a group called the Centuries and joined keyboardist Dennis Miccolis to join The Pulsations, whose members included vocalists George LeGros and Dennis Tufano along with drummer John Poulos. The Pulsations became the house band for WGN-TV’s variety show All-Time Hits.
After the show’s producers suggested they change names to something reminiscent of The British Invasion, the group changed the name to The Buckinghams based on a suggestion. The group liked the name because it was similar to Buckingham Fountain, a local landmark.
Enjoy timeless hits with The Buckinghams Tickets. The newly-renamed Buckinghams then went into the studio in 1966 and recorded twelve songs that year. Some were released as singles, including “I’ll Go Crazy,” originally recorded by James Brown & The Famous Flames and a cover of The Beatles hit “I’ll Call Your Name.” The single “Kind of a Drag” went to number one and got them national exposure.
In 1967, the group released four more top-20 hits with songs like “Hey Baby (They’re Playing our Song)” and “Mercy, Mercy, Mercy.” James William Guercio started to change their sound, over their protests and the group dissolved in 1970. The group reformed in 1980 and continues to tour and record.
