The Box Tops were an instant international hit when the band released "The Letter" in 1967. The song received two Grammy Award nominations, earned a gold disc, sold over four million copies and peaked at the No. 1 spot on the Hot 100 for four weeks.

In 1968, The Box Tops struck gold again after releasing "Cry Like a Baby," which peaked at No. 2 on the Hot 100. The song has since been covered by artists like Kim Carnes and the Hacienda Brothers.

In 1968, The Box Tops released three more studio albums, Choo Choo Train, I Met Her in Church and Sweet Cream Ladies, Forward March. The albums featured instrumental tracks performed by famous musicians Bobby Womack, Gene Chrisman, Reggie Young and Tommy Cogbill. The Box Tops went on a lengthy hiatus from 1970 to 1996.

After the band's hiatus, The Box Tops debuted its self-produced album, Tear Off, in 1998 before focusing on tours worldwide. In 2003, the band performed before sell-out crowds in Germany before returning to the United States to begin a nationwide tour in 2005. The Box Tops went on another hiatus from 2010 to 2015.

In 2017, The Box Tops toured together with bands like The Crowsills, The Association, Three Dog Night, and Chuck Negron in front of sold-out crowds throughout the nation. In addition, the band was inducted into the Memphis Hall of Fame in 2018.
