It originated in Los Angeles, California, with founders led by Bryan Yamami and Masato Baba who continue to blend traditional forms into their own fresh aesthetic while maintaining authenticity. When TaikoProject first made waves in 2005, they became the first American taiko group to win the Tokyo International Taiko Contest. They later memorialized this victory when they were cast in a Mitsubishi Eclipse commercial. For over a decade, the band has performed at some of music’s biggest events, including The Grammy Awards and Academy Award ceremonies. They have also played on NBC’s hit show The Voice as well as The X-Factor and were also featured on 30 Seconds to Mars music video “Up in the Air.”

TaikoProject has performed alongside artists such as Stevie Wonder, Peter Gabriel, Alicia Keys, John Legend and Diplo to name just a few - they also appeared on Ovation TV’s The Art Of, and The Late Late Show With James Corden. They are even renowned internationally performing with Tiesto, Brazil’s Olodum and the Greek singer Antonis Remos among others.
TaikoProject has performed for audiences all over the country at many of today’s most prestigious performing arts centers, including the Ordway Center for the Performing Arts in St. Paul, Minnesota, and Meany Hall at Harvard University. The Ford Foundation and three other organizations recognized TaikoProject as one of America’s Cultural Treasures during 2021 cementing them to record audio tracks for Tokyo’s Olympic Games Opening Ceremony.
