The Tacoma City Ballet was founded in 1955 by Jan Collum as The Concert Ballet Group of Tacoma along with its accompanying Jan Collum School of Classical Ballet. Jan Collum served as the group’s artistic director over the original six company dancers. The company soon grew to a company of 30. Renamed BELLETACOMA in 1965, the company and school built not only a local and regional reputation for excellence in classical ballet performance and instruction but a national one as well.
The company began offering an annual performance season in 1983 and changed the company’s name to its current iteration, Tacoma City Ballet, in 1995. Throughout its 60+ year history, Tacoma City Ballet has fulfilled its mission of bringing the study and performance of classical ballet to all the citizens of Tacoma.
Each year, frequently with the accompaniment of live music, Tacoma City Ballet performs ballet classics from The Nutcracker to Pinocchio. While the company founder’s focus was on classical ballet, Tacoma City Ballet has been stretching its wings and exploring the disciplines of neoclassical, contemporary and modern techniques in original productions like 2012’s Spring Dance Extravaganza and 2021’s The Adventures of Louise: Our Solar System.
