Formed in 2000 by Pasi Pasanen and Juha Raivio of Plutonium Orange, the band quickly filled out its lineup before recording their demo Out of This Gloomy Light. The demo showed promise, and within just a few months Swallow the Sun had signed to Firebox Records.
The band released their first two albums through the label, The Morning Never Came and Ghost of Loss. The latter album saw the band enjoy their first mainstream success, entering the top ten on the Finnish charts. With a growing reputation in hand, Swallow the Sun then toured with high-profile acts Katatonia and Insomnium and collaborated with Amorphis and Nightwish.
Despite a handful of lineup changes, the band continued to record regularly, releasing multiple albums during the rest of the 2000s through Spinefarm Records.
