The band started as Chunk as a play on Garrison’s name but added on the Super to differentiate themselves from a New York jazz band. In 1990 Superchunk released its first self-titled album through Matador Records.

Superchunk found success from their first album as it was critically lauded along with their follow-up 1991s No Pocky for Kitty. Superchunk continued to astound critics with their next releases 1993s On the Mouth and 1994s Foolish. With their legacy established Superchunk began making more special appearances than full-fledged tours.
