The band signed to Island Records in 1999 and released its first EP, Half Hour of Power, in 2000. The band’s debut album, All Killer No Filler, was released in 2001. All Killer No Filler all but assured Sum 41’s place in the pop-punk pantheon, especially after the release of “Fat Lip”, the first single from the album. “Fat Lip” reached number one on Billboard’s Modern Rock Tracks chart and helped the album reach platinum status.
The success of “Fat Lip” and All Killer No Filler helped launch Sum 41 on tour that would see them performing over 300 concerts in a single year. Sum 41 tickets were especially high in demand as many of those shows were with top-tier pop-punk artists such as Blink 182 and The Offspring. Shortly after the tour, the band released their second album, Does This Look Infected? Peaking at 32 on the Billboard 200 chart, Infected did not perform as well as All Killer No Filler but was still a gold-certified success in the United States. Their third album, Chuck, charted at number 10 on the Billboard 200 and was also certified gold.
As of 2019, Sum 41 has released seven albums and received a number of accolades. The band received Juno awards for Group of the Year in 2003 and Rock Album of the Year in 2005 for Chuck. Sum 41 also won a Woodie Award, named after Woodie Guthrie, for Greatest Social Impact after a humanitarian trip to the Democratic Republic of Congo in 2004. Over the years, Sum 41 has continued to write and release music, tour and help to keep the rebellious, energetic spirit of pop-punk music alive and well.
