The current members are Ricky Myers, Eric Morotti, Charlie Errigo, Derek Boyer and Terrance Hobbs. The band formed in 1988 on Long Island and was one of the first groups to sign to Relapse Records. 

Suffocation released their debut album Effigy of the Forgotten in 1991, an album that became strongly influential in the burgeoning extreme metal genre. The band then embarked on their first extensive series of tours throughout the US, Europe and Mexico. Despite a brief hiatus in the early 2000s, Suffocation reunited in 2003 and achieved charting success with the release of Blood Oath. The album made it into the Billboard 200, and the band began touring with other high-profile heavy metal acts like Napalm Death. 

Suffocation has since been entered into the Long Island Music Hall of Fame and is widely recognized as one of the earliest groups to play in what is now known as death metal. Their gruff vocals, complex songwriting and breakneck speed became hallmarks of the genre.
