They have performed under a variety of names including the Tomcats and Bryan and the Tomcats. The members have been credited for their rockabilly style and their modern punk sound.

Stray Cats released their first self-titled studio album in 1981, which had three hit singles. “Rock This Town” was a hit with fans and peaked at number nine on the UK Singles Chart. “Stray Cat Strut” was the albums third single and jumped to number 11 on the UK Singles Chart. Setzer’s guitar solo in the song was listed as number 91 on Guitar World Magazine’s “Top 100 Guitar Solo’s of All-Time” chart. In 2006, the group was inducted into the Long Island Music Hall of Fame.
