Born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, in 1960, Poltz studied at the University of San Diego, where he encountered Robert Driscoll and founded The Rugburns.

The Rugburns quickly amassed a dedicated cult following in and around San Diego, where Poltz met future collaborator Jewel. Poltz began opening for Jewel on nationwide tours, and in 1995 co-wrote Jewel’s song “You Were Meant For Me.” “You Were Meant For Me” was a number two hit on the Billboard Hot 100, as well as in several countries in Europe.

In 1998 Poltz released his debut solo album through Mercury Records, One Left Shoe, which received widespread critical acclaim. In 2000 the artist was named San Diego’s Most Influential Artist of the Decade at the San Diego Music Awards. Poltz’ songs have been used in films, most notably on the soundtrack to Notting Hill.
